The Economist, Dr. Murtada Sulaiman, called for increasing the amounts provided for social protection, and to activate government control bodies to reduce financial and administrative corruption that affects these provided amounts.

Sulaiman said that the government subsidy system is ineffective in achieving the goal of “alleviating the burden of living”, and stated that the majority of beneficiaries are non-eligible for government subsidy.

He explained that successive governments since independence suffer from the burden of government subsidies for petroleum products and basic consumer goods, leading to a deficit in the general budget.
